Curiosity Took Away His Freedom

Oh dear, it is approximately a month since I last updated this blog. I was so bogged down with work and any free time that I had was used to be with the Bride and the growing Dot. I think I was only home about 13 days for the whole of March (much to the Bride’s frustration!) I went to Kuching (3 days) for a Federal Court sitting, then to Langkawi (6 days) for the Judges’ Conference, then to Bangkok (5 days) for a Judicial Colloquium and to Royale Chulan Hotel in Kuala Lumpur (3 days) for the Session’s Court Judges and Magistrates Conference.

Speaking of Kuala Lumpur, I just had a chat with a good friend of mine from KL today. Before I relate the story, allow me to explain briefly the background of the case. Sometime in November, I released one chap from a drug dependant inquiry stating that I doubted the medical report saying that he was a drug dependant. I wrote a lengthy ground for that ruling.

The legal advisor was not happy with my decision and filed for a review to the High Court. The High Court sent the matter back to another Magistrate and unfortunately for the chap, this time, he was placed under police supervision for two years.

The reason why I am highlighting this issue is not to criticize anyone’s judicial discretion. But the fact of the matter is this:

Because of the chap’s stupid curiosity of trying weed, almost half a year was spent going to Court and now another 2 years of police supervision.

Adoyai! Sape suruh gatal nak amik ganja? Sekarang dah kena menyusahkan diri pergi balai polis sebulan sekali.
Blog adjourned!
